Healing Slaves

Slaves trained to assist in the infirmary are NOT Physicians. Slaves have no Caste, even those who were previously Physicians. Slaves would not be trained to be equivalent to Physicians, as no Free would permit slaves to treat any significant injury or illness.

(If for some reason you were once of the Green Caste, you would certainly have more knowledge than most slaves, and you may even be tempted to use it - but know there will be repercussions if you are found to have been treating as a Physician. Priest Kings forbid if Maileen gets hold of you!)

However, slaves do have their purpose in the infirmary! They may provide comfort to the wounded or healing. They may assist the Physicians. They may even perform "first aid" type treatment to Free and slave alike. Slaves are not equivalent to nurses - slaves are equivalent to nurse assistants. The bulk of your duties will be routine, preparatory, and non-urgent in nature.

Understand that a Free person has the right to refuse to be treated by a slave at any time and for any reason.

----------------

On their own, ONCE TRAINED, slaves MAY:

-Perform physical examinations of slaves and Free

-Administer slave wine and second wine, as directed by Free

-Prepare and apply poultices, balms, and salves

-Clean and bandage minor wounds and injuries

-General first-aid care (removing splinters, treating minor burns, giving herbs for stomach upset, splinting a sprain, etc.)

-Assist a Physician in surgery by readying tools and supplies

-Ensure the infirmary is clean and well-stocked; tend the garden

-Tend to the comfort of patients

-Treat for shock

----------------

Slaves may NOT:

-Touch kanda, capture scent, frobicaine, sleeping potion, or tassa powder, except under the express instruction and observation of a Physician or Apprentice Physician of Laura. These are potent drugs and rapidly render a patient unconscious, thus could be used against the health of a Free person. A slave may NOT have "standing orders" to administer these things, as they are kept in a locked cabinet in the Physician's office and thus require the use of the Physician's key to access. A slave would not be permitted to keep a key of their own. If a visiting Physician requests a slave to administer one of these drugs, the visiting Physician must provide it from their own mobile kit, as they would not have a key to the Physician's cabinet.

-Perform surgery

-Set broken bones or dislocated joints

-Cauterize wounds

-Stitch wounds of Free people, though they may stitch the wounds of slaves

----------------

Slaves should be CAUTIOUS:

-Giving injections. Inject slaves freely, but recommend begging a Free for permission to inject them. Not all will approve.

-Removing weapons such as daggers or arrows from wounds. You must beg Free for permission to touch the weapon and you should be certain there is not a Physician available to attend a wound of this severity.

-Attending to any major injury, particularly of Free. Understand that you will not have had the training to handle these issues, you will have - at most - observed the Physicians working. If you are the only one available, of course you would do as ordered in attempting to treat an injured Free person... but to protect yourself, it's advisable to beg forgiveness for your meager skills and request someone seek a Physician while you do what you can.
